Patna: Recent studies indicate that about three hundred million people across the globe are afflicted by asthma and 80 % death related to this is reported from poor and under developed nations. At the initial stage this disease has the potential to be cured, provided the patients take regular medicine and care. Dr Prakash Singh of Paras HMRI Hospital Patna, on World Asthma Day highlighted that this disease could also be because of a persistent infection in the lungs. This infection is caused by pneumonia in children. Allergy is another cause of asthma besides the weakening of the immune system of the body. The number of asthma patients today is increasing day by day across the country mainly due to water and environment pollution. The people should avoid dust to escape this disease.

Dr. Sinha said asthma are of four types: First is Intermediate Persistent Asthma in which lungs swell occasionally, second is Mild Persistent Asthma in which respiratory disorder is reported once a week, third is Moderate Persistent Asthma where respiratory problem is permanent and fourth is Severe Persistent Asthma in which patient can do anything quickly because of acute asthma. He said the patient should avoid anything allergic to them and avoid air pollution. The patient can also use inhaler and should not consume noodles, prawns, cold drinks, cold water and curd. Inhaler should be used before physical exercise, and one should take special care during change in seasons.

He said the allergy testing machine is soon coming to Paras HMRI Hospital which will help the asthma patients to check their allergy. There is also arrangement of immune therapy which is 2-3 year course and it is useful to 70 to 80% patients.
