The prostate gland exists in a male reproductive system. It is similar to the shape & size of a walnut & is found right below the bladder & in front of the rectum. Prostate helps to make the semen which comprises of sperm from testicles through the penis during an ejaculation.

Prostate nodule

A firm area which can appear on a prostate is known as a prostate nodule. It is hard & raised & feels similar to the finger knuckle.It can be cancerous and must be checked by a doctor. An individual having prostate nodule can be referred to some specialist & given a biopsy which is when a part of the tissue is taken off & sent for any further test.

Nodule vs Tumor

A nodule or tumor on a prostate is the same, as they are an abnormal growth. But a nodule is considered as benign growth whereas, a tumor is commonly referred to as cancer.  If the usage of both the terms by a doctor confuses the patient, he shall get it clarified by his doctor to get a complete understanding of the disorder.

Prostate cancer

A prostate cancer takes place when the cells present in a prostate gland begin to grow uncontrollably. Nearly every instance of prostate cancer is a type called adenocarcinomas. Other rare types are:

  • Sarcomas
  • Neuroendocrine tumors
  • Small cell carcinomas
  • Transitional cell carcinomas

Prostate cancer happens to be the most common kind of cancer in the US. The death rates is also high in such cases. Older men are at higher risk to have a prostate cancer as 60% of the cases occur to men who are aged 65 years or above.Not all the prostate nodules can be termed as cancer and can be a result of many other conditions

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland & is often a result of some bacterial infection. Nearly 50% of males are inflicted by prostatitis at some point in life. It doesn’t raise the risk of the other prostate diseases.
