Once you have decided to take the most important step in eradicating COVID-19 from India – getting the vaccination for corona, the next question you’ll have is which COVID vaccine is most effective. Currently in India, the choice is between covishield vs covaxin. While both are effective and safe to take, each one has particular benefits.

COVID vaccine Covishield was developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca, and is being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. It is a viral vector vaccine, and is about 90 percent effective. There are several vaccination centers across India that have Covishield available. Compared to the Covaxin vaccination for Corona, the COVID vaccine Covishield has more side effects. The side effects such as headache, vomiting, nausea, and fever are also more intense. In very rare cases of 1 in 100,000 people, Covishield can also lead to blood clots. There is also a difference between when you can get the second dose. For COVID vaccine Covishield, you can get the second dose 8-12 weeks after your first dose. The gap is longer for Covishield vs Covaxin.

The second COVID vaccination for 18+ that is now available is Covaxin, an inactivated virus-based vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research. It is 78 percent effective. For those worried about the severity of side effects, Covaxin is the better option, as it has the least amount of fever, chills, and pain. Covaxin vaccination centers also allow you to get the second dose of the vaccine in just 4-6 weeks, a shorter time compared to Covishield. Just like with Covishield, there are plenty of Covaxin vaccination centers across India.

Whether or not we will need booster shots for COVID vaccines is still being debated. While currently, two doses are strong enough, with the new Covid Delta variant and the expectation of an even stronger third wave Covid or corona, experts are suggesting that it is possible we may need a booster shot of Covid Vaccine for increased immunity. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will learn more about whether booster shot of Covid Vaccine will be necessary. Booster shot for COVID vaccine could take time, as COVID vaccination for 18+ has only just begun.
