Dr. Vijay Chandra, leading Neurologist specializing in Dementia, Memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease has authored a book in association with World Health Organization (WHO). The book titled – ‘Ageing Gracefully – Diversity of Dementia’ focuses on raising awareness about Dementia, reducing the stigma associated with the disease and focuses on promoting a better understanding about the disease in patients and caregivers. The book addresses support to human rights of patients and the undue social pressure and judgment that they are subjected to.
According to Dr. Vijay Chandra, Sr Consultant Neurology, Dementia Expert, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, “Dementia is an umbrella term that is used to describe neurological ailments that progressively affect the memory and cognitive abilities of a human being. This disease can affect the normal daily functioning of a person and deteriorate his social life. Patients suffering from dementia tend to disassociate from the world and feel isolated; this situation further complicates their condition. More than 10 million Indians are suffering from Dementia currently, however, their condition is yet to be diagnosed and understood clearly. India due to its lack of documentation in healthcare statistics is at crossroads. The aging population of the country is all susceptible to a dark future of unawareness, misunderstanding, and judgment, which can damage the emotional health of not just the patient, but also the entire family. With this
the book we aim at sensitizing the population today to be aware of the signs and symptoms and take an expert opinion when necessary.”
Dr. Dharminder Nagar, Managing Director, Paras Health while sharing his appreciation for the initiative states, “Dementia can affect anyone. Any normal and healthy human being today may be falling into the deep abyss of a neurological ailment tomorrow.
Moreover, these neurological conditions currently have no cure and can only be managed with medicines and most importantly care. It is important for us to take such issues on a priority basis and ensure that we have the medical expertise, acumen, research, awareness and social acceptability to ensure that the best is provided to the patient.”
