Over 300 prisoners attended the camp where advice on health and hygiene was also provided to raise awareness among prisoners
Lack of personal and sanitary hygiene in prisons often leads to diseases and infections
With an objective to provide access to good quality healthcare to prisoners and educate them about the need for improving standards of personal hygiene, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon today organized a health camp in association with Bhondsi Jail, near Kadarpur, Gurgaon.
The four-hour long camp took place at the jail premises where more than 300 inmates had the opportunity to undergo check-ups from specialist doctors at the hospital and receive first hand information and expert opinion on healthcare and hygiene.
Poor nutritional status, lack of hygiene, and sharing of limited toilet facilities by several prisoners are factors that increase incidence of infections like tuberculosis in inmates.
“Apart from offering basic health screenings and check-ups, our experts also dispensed important advice to inmates on how they can improve their health standards by adopting better practices of personal hygiene, and improving their physical well-being. They may be prisoners, but their health is as important as any other fellow citizen. It is our strong belief that private healthcare providers must also play a role in helping ensure better access of healthcare delivery to prisoners. This is why such camps are all the more important for them,” adds Dr. Neeraj Bishnoi , Facility Director , Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
Apart from physical health, prison inmates, especially those who are serving long terms also face mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
“Convicts are away from their family and friends and it is of course not an easy task to stand loneliness for years. Poor state of mental health and depression often affects the physical well being of a person. Besides immunity-related diseases such TB, a large number of jail inmates suffer from diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension and various heart and skin disorders,” says Dr. Tapan Ghose, HOD , Cardiology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
The camp included a number of health check-ups including elementary height/weight measurement, Body Mass Index analysis, random blood sugar, blood pressure check, ophthalmology screening, and consultation with cardiologist, orthopedic specialist and general physician.
Since its inception, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon has been inclined to the vision of innovative, and accessible, and compassionate medical care to its patients as well as the society at large. The hospital offers around 55 super-specialties supported by a team of doctors of international repute. Today’s health check-up camp was a part of the series of CSR initiatives taken up by the hospital in recent past.
The data from this camp will be compiled and medication will be carried out for each inmate as per the requirements of individuals along with multiple follow-up camps in near future, informed authorities at the hospital.
