On the occasion of World Tumor Day, Dr. Mukund Prasad, Neurosurgeon at Paras HMRI Hospital, the biggest super specialty hospital in Patna, said, “Getting brain tumor operated has become pretty safe because of availability of latest technology and state-of-art facilities in the hospital. An MRI machine not just helps locate the tumor but also tells the structure of the brain because of which no harm is caused to the brain. Also there is availability of ICU where thorough treatment takes place.” He said, “There is no particular reason that causes tumor. However it is believed that as an after effect of radiation, its danger lurks. Hence it is always advisable to get a doctor’s prescription/ certificate before going for an X-ray, a CT Scan or radiotherapy since a CT scan produces radiation close to 400 X-rays.

Dr. Prasad pointed out a few symptoms of tumor including headache, vomiting, behavioural change, inability to see, hear or smell.  The onset of these must immediately be brought to the notice of a neurologist for timely diagnosis. He threw light on two kinds of tumor – first one is cancerous and the other one is non-cancerous (benign). One does not need to worry about  getting one’s cancer treated because of availability of modern machines. Patients do not need to travel to Delhi or Mumbai to get treatment done since all kinds of modern amenities are available at the hospital at affordable rates. Patients suffering from brain tumor, brain haemorrhage, accident are dealt with great care and attention and are immediately operated on. Consequently the number of such operations has increased to 2,500 since 2013.
