Bacterial meningitis is not spread through casual contact or the airborne route. Meningitis is a potentially deadly disease that affects more than 1 million people worldwide each year. Symptoms of meningitis are high fever, headache, vomiting, rashes over body, stiff neck sensitive to bright light, irritability, seizures, drowsiness and death. Meningitis can affect people of all ages groups. It is more common in babies, children teenagers and young by adults. It can be fatal and affect within 24 hours leading to death. Some types of meningitis can be treated by vaccines. Several meningitis is caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi which often live is our own bodies. Basically these germs stay in the intestines or in nose and throat, where they may or may not make us sick. But if they spread to meninges, they can cause inflammation. Meninges  are the covering tissues over brain and  spinal cord. Meningitis  is contagious prolonged close contact  of germs are through close personal contact like coughing, sneezing, kissing etc, when throat secretions for infected. It spreads from person to other person by skin contact, guts or chest. There germs get in an blood stream and travel brain and spinal cord to start infection.

Sharing household items like as tooth brushes, cigarettes, towel etc can help in spread of infection. It is thought the bacteria are able to invade the body more easily via the nose throat during winter due to recent infection with a flu virus. For this some type of meningitis can spread through swimming pools. The illness can be caught from some one who is ill with meningitis .But simply by someone who is a carrier meaning  thereby that the person is only carry the infection and   himself/herself not effected  and out break can occur  where over crowding is there like hostels, boarding school, military bases, universities, slums etc. Crowded condition at religious gathering also put people at an increased risk of contracting meningitis. Be careful around people who have meningitis. For the vaccine preventable meningitis consult medical specialists.
