59 yrs old retired army man saved successfully from progressive lung cancer with path breaking surgery at Paras Cancer Centre – Paras Hospitals Gurugram

A team of cancer specialists at Paras Cancer Centre – Paras Hospitals Gurugram successfully treated a 59 yrs old retired army man with path-breaking surgery. The patient, Balwant Singh, was suffering from lung cancer and needed a Pneumonectomy on an immediate basis. Due to the extent of the bronchogenic malignancy and the aggressiveness of cancer, the surgery was complex and needed specialized surgical skill and precision. The treatment and surgery were headed by Dr. Parveen Yadav, Consultant Onco-Surgery, Paras Cancer Centre & Paras Hospitals Gurugram.

According to Balwant Singh, “The signs and symptoms began with a mild cough which became chronic in few days. I started to get mucus and blood in my sputum. A persistent cough would make t difficult for me to do anything constructive. I started to lose weight, felt weak all the time and felt short of breath. The situation was so difficult that I could not climb the fleet of stairs leading to my house. Dejected by the complications, which was considered as common cold and cough or pneumonia, I decided to consult a senior pulmonologist at the earliest.”

The CT Scan of the lungs and the upper body highlighted that the right upper lobe of the lungs highlighted bronchogenic malignancy – lung cancer. Balwant Singh was told that the right treatment for the progressive lung cancer would include lung surgery that would remove the carcinogenic parts of the lung and reconstruct few areas to ensure that the capacity and the performance of the lungs is not compromised. However, the case was highlighted as complex, complicated and risky. Numerous surgeons declined to perform the surgery sighting the complexity and the risk involved. However, Dr. Parveen at Paras Cancer Centre understood the case and decided to perform the path-breaking surgery.

According to Dr. Parveen Yadav, Consultant Onco-Surgery, Paras Cancer Centre & Paras Hospitals Gurugram, “At the current time, lung adenocarcinoma is the most common form of lung cancer, accounting for 40 to 50 percent of cases. These tumors tend to grow in the periphery of the lungs, rather than in the central airways like the bronchi. Balwant’s case also highlighted the same and needed immediate Pneumonectomy to remove the cancerous parts of the lungs.”

During the pneumonectomy, the team of cancer surgeons made a cut (incision) on the side of Balwant’s body. The surgeons cut some muscles and spread the ribs apart. They then surgically removed the affected lung. The sac that contained the lung (pleural space) filled up with air and eventually, fluid took the place of this air. The 8-hour long surgery ensured that the best was provided to the patient.

The post-surgery rehabilitation care was also exceptional and personalized. A team of physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists ensured that Balwant slowly and comfortably graduated from walking with support to walking independently. Post-discharge also the team supported him to make him able again to walk briskly.

Balwant shares, “When I had lost all hope, Paras Team stood next to me. Dr. Parveen was like an angel to me. He made me understand that I have got a second chance. I shall forever be indebted to him for taking the lead and ensuring that I get the best care. When all doors were closed for me, Dr. Parveen opened the one which had gratitude and compassion. Thank you, Paras for having such great and benevolent doctors in your team.”
