Leading orthopedic experts, neurosurgeons and spine surgeons talk about best practices in treating injuries, deformities and tumors

Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna today conducted a major conference of leading Orthopedic, Neurologists and Spine Surgeons to discuss the latest treatment protocols and guidelines as well as the best practices to deal with traumatic injury management, brain tumor and spinal deformities.

The conference brought together a large number of physicians, orthopedic specialists, neurologists and spine surgeons from across the country and helped provide a platform for sharing of latest information and knowledge among the community.

The (Continued Medical Education) CME session was organized at Hotel Gargee Grand, with the medical session being introduced by Paras HMRI Hospital’s mentor Dr. A. A Hai, followed by a brief talk on the importance of information sharing among the medical community by Dr. Talat Halim (Medical Director, Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna). Around 60 eminent doctors of Patna attended the conference.

Dr. John Mukhopadhaya, Director–Orthopedic & Joint Replacement spoke on the topic “Assessment and Management of Multiple injured patients” at a session chaired by Dr. Shajanand, President IMA. He spoke about the need for an inter-disciplinary approach in treating severely injured patients to minimize damage, reduce risk of disability and improve chances of survival. “It is very important to institute the right processes for seamless pre-hospital care, emergency room care and emergency surgery,” added Dr Mukhopadhaya.

Stressing specially on the need for improving pre-hospital care and triage systems in India, Dr Mukhopadhaya said that many lives can be saved in our country if right ambulance and pre-hospital protocols are followed. He also underlined the need for better training of emergency department professionals to deal with cases of multiple traumatic injuries.

The Second speaker Dr. Mukund Prasad, Sr. Consultant Neurosurgeon, spoke on the subject “Brain Tumors & their Management” at a session chaired by Dr. Bimal Kalra, Chairman IMA. He said over the past two decades, research has helped lay down treatment modalities that help significantly prolong the lives of individuals with brain tumors. Better understanding of the types of tumors, better surgical interventions, and a more targeted approach to therapy and radiation has helped improve quality of life of patients. He stressed on the importance of early diagnosis by physicians and quick referrals to specialists to prevent delay in detection.

The third speaker was Dr. Gautam R Prasad Consultant- Spine Surgeon, who spoke on the topic “Spinal Deformity in Pediatrics & Adults” at a session chaired by Dr. Ajay Kumar Sinha, Chairman IMA.  Dr. Prasad stressed on the fact that with the increase in the number of road accidents and other outdoor injuries, spinal deformities are becoming common incidence nowadays, not only in older adults but also the pediatric population.

“It usually begins with pain and weakening of the spine, but the issue progresses slowly throughout the life and may lead to repetitive trauma and emotional problems. While non-surgical methods such as bracing limits the symptoms of spinal deformity temporarily, surgical methods on the other hand sometimes include risks such as bleeding, limited movement, and infection. It is critical to use the safe placement of instrumentation and a follow-up rehabilitation process to improve the effectiveness of clinical outcomes in case of spine deformities in individuals,” said Dr Prasad.

The conference witnessed voluntary participation from the city’s medical community. It aimed at developing and enhancing professional knowledge about peer-reviewed best practices in the management, diagnosis, and supportive care for respective medical specialties.
