• Nearly 50 First Aids kits given out to Traffic police personnel to equip them with immediate medical assistance for road accident victims
• BLS training imparted to bike taxi officials of YAYA
• Ambulances placed at NH8 to provide better and quick services in road accident incidents
As we observe Road Safety Week, leading mutli-specialty healthcare provider, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon has launched a series of drives and initiatives to help raise awareness of road safety measures, and equip traffic personnel and officials of bike taxi to save more lives on the deadly Indian roads.
Contributing to the campaign since first day of the week, the hospital initiated a drive to install first aid kids in the jeeps of traffic police personnel, who are usually the first persons to reach accident sites. The hospital volunteers distributed First Aid Kits to the Traffic Police jeeps on. The distribution of kits not only equipped the traffic police personnel with immediate medical assistance to help a road accident victim, it also emphasized on the importance of the observing personal safety, especially while on roads.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that by 2020 road accidents may account for as many as 546,000 deaths in India. With nearly 400000 road accidents, India suffers a loss of up to 1.42 lakh lives every year, while hundreds of victims are left with permanent disability making the country’s roads the most dangerous roads in the world.
“Many lives are lost due to inadequate emergency care provided to the victims of road accidents every year in India. Considering the high rates of road fatalities, a WHO report has suggested India to have more number of deaths due to road accident than anywhere else in the world. At our hospital, of 10 emergency patients, we encounter atleast 3 to be accidental cases. With huge number of road accidents, nearly 30-40% cases coming to our hospital are road accident cases. In this context, it has become important to observe a week like this wherein people would not only be educated about the importance of safe driving and following traffic rules but would also be equipped with crucial life saving skills,” said Dr Imtiyaz Gani Reshi Consultant And Emergency Head ,Paras Hospitals Gurgaon.
Government statistics present a very dismal picture of Gurgaon as maximum accidents are believed to occur here. The year 2014 witnessed nearly 716 accidents on the district’s various highways. Further, data procured till 28 February, 2015 showcased that 107 accidents had already occurred in Gurgaon. Considering the fact that many lives and disabilities are caused due to lack of immediate medical supervision to the injured, the hospital also provided BLS training to the bike taxi officials who are regular pliers on the road and often witness mishaps closely. The training included educating the bike taxi officials with important emergency practices such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or measures to control bleeding.
“Loss of life in case of road accidents due to excessive blood loss is a very common thing. Additionally many lives are lost while transferring the victim to the hospital from the accident spot as during the time, the patient is not given any immediate relief to be able to sustain till the destination. Amidst the scenario, where sometimes even the ambulance takes time reaching the spots, people like auto and taxi drivers are available within the reach. In case of Gurgaon, the trend of bike taxi is very prevalent. Therefore, we thought it would be best to train them with BLS training as they happen to be the first reaching the victim. A basic BLS training can help in saving lives,” added Dr Reshi.
The hospital also contributed to the drive by placing its ambulances on NH8 throughout the week. The ambulances were kept on high alert to be able to reach to the nearest spot as early as possible to avoid maximum possible loss in terms of life and healthcare.
