The OPDs conducted in smaller towns help give patients access to specialized experts and better reference mechanism to tertiary care

Two patients referred to the hospital with severe orthopedic trauma successfully treated recently

Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon today highlighted the exemplary success of its OPD outreach programs in bringing highly specialized tertiary care to the population of Rewari and adjoining areas, by showcasing two recently treated patients of severe orthopedic trauma and injury.

Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon conducts outreach OPDs in different towns and hospitals to help patients of smaller towns and centres get better and nearer access to quality experts, especially in cases of severe trauma or cardiac disorders. Under the program, two specialists of the hospital conduct OPDs at local hospitals and clinics regularly and suggest referrals if needed.

Under this initiative, two patients of major orthopaedic trauma who needed prolonged and complex treatments were recently treated successfully at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon. The patients were referred from Atam Prakash Hospital, Rewari to Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.

Vivek Yadav, 28, was referred to Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon with multiple fractures and bladder injury suffered due to road accident. The patient who suffered severe threat to life as well as threat of life-long disability was first stabilized by resuscitation, followed by blood transfusion to make for the lost blood. He was then taken up for surgery in emergency for fixation of the fractures and repair of bladder injury. During the 3 hour long surgery, the patient was treated for multiple fractures that included fracture of femur, radius, ulna, fracture of pelvis with disruption pubis and ruptured neck of bladder.

“Accident victims of major orthopedic trauma need immediate emergency care. Many such cases in our country end up with mortality or life-long disability when immediate treatment specialized can avoid this. Vivek was severely injured and needed specialized emergency treatment to save his life and prevent disability which we are happy was given to him at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon,” said Dr. Ravi Sauhta, Sr. Consultant – Orthopaedics

After a 5 day stay at the hospital during which he was closely monitored and examined, Vivek was discharged in stable condition and referred back to Atam Prakash Hospital for further follow-up.

“Our initiative of conducting OPDs is intended at helping populations in smaller and remote areas get early and right medical care. We are happy that through this initiative we have been able to make a difference in the lives of a lot of patients, be it accident victims or cardiac patients. These two cases are just a few examples,” said Dr. Devendra Yadav, Consultant -Orthopaedics

The second case was of Ishwar Singh Yadav, 64, who was referred from Atam Praksh Hospital, Rewari with bicondylar fracture tibia with compartment syndrome. The condition involved fracture in the shinbone, caused due to major fall. The fracture had not only caused damage to the bone but was accompanied by compartment syndrome, a condition in which a severe injury results in bleeding in the leg muscle and causes increased pressure in the muscle. If left untreated or poorly treated this condition can result in nerve damage due to decreased blood supply and possibility of paralysis or amputation.

The patient was taken up for immediate damage control surgery and immediate compartment release and stabilization of fracture with external fixator and skin grafting was done. Once his grafted wound healed patient was taken up for definitive 2^nd stage surgery and removal of fixation with double plate grafting, With all his injuries healed now, the patient is recovering well.
