Gurugram performed the first TAVR Myval case without the need of general anesthesia or ventilator. This rare feat was done in a 72-year-old post bypass surgery patient

· The patient had already undergone bypass surgery earlier hence was not so willing for second open chest surgery.

· Only a few centers in Delhi & NCR have performed this procedure till date.

· TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that repairs the aortic heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve

Gurugram, 7th February 2020: Paras Hospital, Gurugram, known for performing multitude of advanced cardiac procedure, has become one of the first hospitals in Delhi & NCR to successfully performed Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR) Myval on an 72-year-old patient Mr. TS, who had severe narrowing of the heart valve and history of bypass surgery (2005) along with angioplasty done earlier, he was advised high risk open heart surgery again with the risk of death. Opening the chest again was a challenge for the surgeons.

TAVR is the new treatment modality for patients who are at risk or unwilling to undergo open heart valve replacement surgery. TAVR places a replacement valve through a catheter or tube inserted through the femoral artery (the large artery in the groin). The TAVR procedure is also beneficial for treating patients with previously failed bioprosthetic valve, hence preventing an additional surgical intervention.

Associate director and Unit head cardiology, Dr Amit Bhushan Sharma, who has pioneered the structural heart disease revolution at Paras with many firsts to his credit namely the TAVR procedure then the world’s smallest pacemaker ( leadless ) stroke protection device to name a few said the patient had gone into the repeated heart failure and complex angioplasty.

“The heart team headed by Dr Amit Bhushan Sharma along with Dr Shiv Goel, Cardiologist, Echocardiographer and Radiology team and Intensivists successfully performed the second TAVR Myval at Paras Hospitals,Gurugram recently on a patient, who had severe narrowing of the heart valve. This highly symptomatic patient who had difficulty in breathing got benefit from this surgery and is miraculously now able to perform all normal activities all within a span of 36 hours,” said Dr. Amit Bhushan Sharma.

According to the multiple reports, India has 1 million cases of aortic stenosis mainly due to age related degradation of the aortic valve—an important cause not only in India but in other parts of the world as well. Although less invasive procedure to replace the valve is the much sought after treatment today, the number of such procedures is comparatively less in India due to cost and access issues. Worldwide nearly 1,20,000 TAVI procedure done till now.

“There are multiple benefits of the procedure being minimally invasive. It aids faster recovery, minimizes the chances of infection is less painful involves shorter hospital stay for the patient, no scar or surgery marks, no long term blood thinner and decreases the chances of injuries to nearby structures said Dr Sharma .If we see the estimates, Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most prevalent heart diseases globally and the number of cases at any conservative estimate would cross 3 to 3.5 per cent of the elderly population,” added Dr Sharma.

Myval is most advanced therapy for trans catheter aortic valve replacement It is the country’s first indigenous Make in India initiative Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR) device, which has got coveted CE and Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) approval. The CE certification would enable Myval-THV to reach over 100 countries in Europe and outside of India which accept CE mark document for their own regulatory approvals.
